1 Typical Beginning of Night/Run Activities

• Setup MX Openwindows configuration and install ``mxpackage'' on the Sun.
• Make sure all instrument cabling is correctly connected.
• Power up CCD (see CCD manual)
• Power up MX and start Enterprise communications software (next chapter)
• Initialize Enterprise and exercise probes
• MX Probe Center Alignment with microscope
• B&C Spectrograph focus
• Take biases, darks and chip flats
• Ask Telescope Operator to acquire First Star
• Focus the telescope and initialize autoguider
• MX Guide Aperture Alignment
• Ask the telescope operator to acquire your MX alignment field
• MX Rotation Alignment
• MX Decenter Alignment
• Observing!

1.1 Workstation Configuration

MX observers use a slightly modified version of the standard Steward CCD observing environment on the observer's workstation. As of September 1996, the environment for Solaris / OpenWindows / IRAF / ICE is modified as follows:

1. Create .setenv.mxpackage
2. Create and edit loginlocal.cl in /home/bokobs/ (home directory for IRAF)
3. Get the pre-compiled mxpackage archive from John's directory on abell
4. Unpack the mxpackage archive
5. Copy some relevant files into the home directory:

To execute these steps in an almost completely automated fashion, say ``cl < mxpackage.setup_bok'', and then follow the instructions. You can find the script file at:
``/net/abell/d1/hill/mx/mxpackage.setup_bok''. More of the gory details are contained as comments in this IRAF script file.
