1. Description of Tasks

1.1 Supply Description

1.1.1 Enclosure Rotation Bogies and Drives

This Statement of Work includes the manufacture of the Rotation Bogies that support the rotating enclosure of the telescope. The rotating portion of the enclosure rides on four bogies constrained by a Circular Rail secured to the fixed enclosure ring wall structure. The front pair of bogies have six wheels each while the rear pair of bogies have four wheels each.

The Supply includes: the preparation of shop drawings; the construction and the machining of the steel structure of the equalizing beams and wheel supports, and the subsequent integration of the wheels, articulation axes, bearings and mechanical accessories.

Assembly and integration of the bogie units will include integration of the eight (8) motor / gearbox units (plus one spare) to be supplied by the LBTPO.

A set of eight (4 x 2 = 8) adjustable tie rods are required for holding the bogies in place over the Circular Rail during the enclosure erection. The Supplier is asked to design and supply these adjustable tie rods to attach to existing embed plates in the telescope pier.

The Supply also includes verification testing to ascertain that the functionality and proper alignment of the bogie units has been achieved. These tests include the functionality of each driving wheel on its bogie, and the verification of the correct alignment and convergence of the wheels in each bogie.

1.1.2 Technical Specifications

The hardware will be manufactured in accordance with the Large Binocular Telescope Project's Technical Specification "301a003", entitled "Telescope Rotating Enclosure Rotation Bogies and Drives", revision "d", dated 05 June 1997; and in accordance with the applicable drawings listed below.

1.1.3 Delivery Date

The preferred delivery date for the Enclosure Rotation Bogies is 1 April 1998. We will consider offers which do not meet this date in exchange for reduced cost.

The proposal should include a timeline of the Supply activities.

1.1.4 Shipping

Packing for shipment and transportation of the components to Safford, Arizona is included in this Statement of Work.

Please list the shipping costs as a separate item from the price of the main supply.

1.1.5 Technical Assistance during Erection

Technical assistance during final installation in the LBT enclosure on Mt. Graham is not included in this Statement of Work, but the LBTC reserves the right to negotiate for such services at a later time. This assistance may also include the fabrication of templates to assure that the bogies match onto the corresponding mounting flanges of the enclosure main truss.
