1. Description of Tasks

1.1 Supply Description

1.1.1 Telescope Driving Systems

The supply includes: the construction and assembly of nine driving units (motors), four for each axis plus a spare, and the delivery of one test bench for two units to be used to verify the electromechanical performance of the units. In detail the supply includes:

1.1.2 Technical Specifications

The hardware will be manufactured in accordance with the Large Binocular Telescope Project's Technical Specification "401a002", entitled "Driving Systems", revision "h", dated December 23, 1998; and in accordance with the applicable drawings listed below.

1.1.3 Delivery Date

The preferred delivery date for the Drive Systems is June 30, 1999.

The proposal should include a timeline of the Supply activities including shipping to Milan, Italy where the Factory Pre-Erection of the Telescope Structure will occur.

The Inland frameless motors are due to be shipped from the Kollmorgen plant in Radford, Virginia at the end of January 1999. They should be in the Supplier's factory soon after the contract is awarded.

1.1.4 Shipping

The Supply includes shipping the test bench and the nine assembled drive units to Ansaldo Energia in Milan, Italy.

The items will reside in Milan for approximately one year, and then will be shipped along with the telescope structure to the final erection location on Mt. Graham in Arizona. The Supply does not include shipping the test bench and drive units to Arizona.

Please list the shipping and insurance costs to Milan as separate items from the price of the main supply.

1.1.5 Technical Assistance during Erection

The Pre-Erection of all major telescope components will be required in Milan, Italy before erection of the telescope on Mt. Graham in Arizona. This method has been selected to ensure proper form, fit and functional operation of each and every component of the telescope, before crating and shipment to Arizona. The Pre-Erection activities have been described in general form in the Technical Specification "401e028" , entitled "Telescope Pre-Erection". Technical assistance during pre-erection of the telescope in the factory in Milan for the installation of the Driving Systems is not included in this Supply. The LBTC reserves the right to negotiate for such services at a later time.
