1. Description of Tasks

1.1 Supply Description

1.1.1 Hydrostatic Bearing System

This Statement of Work includes the manufacture of the Hydrostatic Bearing System for the Large Binocular Telescope. The Supply includes the construction of the Hydrostatic Supports for the azimuth and elevation axes of the Large Binocular Telescope structure together with the design and construction of the related hydraulic equipment and electrical cabinet. The Supply also includes the hydraulic motors and controls of the auxiliary elevation drives of the telescope along with the stow pin mechanisms.

1.1.2 Technical Specifications

The hardware will be designed and manufactured in accordance with the Large Binocular Telescope Project's Technical Specification of Support Systems, "401a003", revision "i", dated July 22, 1997; and in accordance with the applicable drawings listed below.

Additional hardware will be manufactured in accordance with the Large Binocular Telescope Project's Technical Specification of the Measuring Heads, Auxiliary Drives, Stow Pins and Limit Switches "401a006", revision "b", dated July 23, 1997; and in accordance with the applicable drawings listed below.

The Supplier is asked to provide a certain amount of system engineering in the design and manufacture of the hydraulic plant. This will include verification and making the final design of the hydraulic circuits and the hydraulic power plant with the associated electrical and electronic control circuits. The Large Binocular Telescope Project's Technical Report of Supporting Driving and Measuring Systems, "401a001", revision "e", dated March 3, 1997 describes the dimensioning criteria of the supports and the requested performance.

1.1.3 Delivery Date

The preferred delivery date for the Hydrostatic Bearing System is 15 January 1999.

The proposal should include a time line of the Supply activities.

1.1.4 Shipping

Packing for shipment is included in the Supply. Tranportation to the telescope pre-erection site is not included in this Statement of Work.

1.1.5 Technical Assistance during pre-Erection.

The pre-erection of all major telescope components will be required at a "to be determined" location before erection of the telescope on Mt. Graham in Arizona. This method has been selected to ensure proper form, fit and functional operation of each and every component of the telescope, before crating and shipment to Arizona.

Technical assistance during pre-erection of the telescope at the "to be determined" factory location for the installation and start-up of the Hydrostatic Bearing System is included in this Supply.

Technical assistance during final installation on Mt. Graham is not included in this Statement of Work, but the LBTC reserves the right to negotiate for such services at a later time.

Besides the description of the maintenance actions, it shall provide a maintenance checklist with information about:

1.3.3 Acceptance Plan

Prepare and submit for approval an Acceptance Plan describing test procedures and inspections that shall be performed prior to acceptance. The Acceptance Plan must be submitted to the Technical Representative for approval before starting the construction and materials purchase. The Technical Representative shall comment on the request within 15 days from the receipt, and in the event of no comment, the request is to be considered approved.

The test procedures and inspections shall include:

1.3.3.1 Test Procedures

The Test Procedures shall describe in detail all the necessary operations to perform verification through a test. A Test Procedure shall be produced for every verification test required and shall contain the following information:

The Test Procedure shall be submitted for review prior to performing the test and shall also be incorporated in the specific Test Report.

1.3.3.2 Test Reports

The Test Reports shall summarize the findings of the tests. The Test Report shall be submitted to the LBTC not later than 30 days after the test. A Test Report shall contain the following information:
