Jackson Cabin (near Muleshoe, AZ)

19 March 2011

Here's a summary of our trip to Jackson Cabin and the Muleshoe Preserve in the Galiuros Mountains on Saturday March 19, 2011. The morning started with breakfast of pancakes and fruit at John's house. Participants in the trip were John H. with friends Terry, Jessa and Reuben in his Avalanche, Bob P. and Jon R. in Bob's Blazer, John S. in his Toyota P/U, Midway Mike and Ron P. in Mike's Cherokee. We figured Ron took care of all the damage by 09:35 when his Toyota died on the I-10 on-ramp. Fortunately, Mike's Jeep was only 100 yards away, so Ron was able to come with us while his Jeep got towed back to town with fuel problems. (We were wrong about the damage quota.)

From I-10, we went in via Pomerene Rd, Cascabel Rd, and Tri-Links Rd. Then we took off on the power line road that makes a "short cut" (for wheelin' fun) across Allen Flat to Muleshoe Ranch Road. We stopped at the Muleshoe Ranch headquarters to check out Hooker Hot Springs and eat our lunch.

After lunch we headed up the 4WD drive road that goes from the Muleshoe HQ to Jackson Cabin. It's an easy road at the beginning, but gets up to rating=3 where you need 4WD by the end. The scenic cliffs are spectacular on this route, although some haze from the fire near Nogales hampered the photography. We met a cowboy on horseback at the old Pride Ranch (with the windmill). About 3PM we noticed that Bob's rear wheel was wobbling. Further inspection revealed that 5 of the 6 wheel studs were broken off underneath his wheel spacer. We spent about an hour moving 2 donor studs from the other side of the axle. We sent Bob driving slowly home on 4 and 3 studs. The rest of us drove the remaining 5 miles to Jackson Cabin. There we met a guy with a horse and 3 dogs (was it Jackson?). We made it the 14 miles back to Muleshoe HQ in 1.5 hours without any stops for tourism or repairs. We saw a herd of deer as sunset was approaching. A good time was had by all.

Do you see the faces in the rocks?

Bob discovers that he is well short of a full set of wheel studs (only 1 left).

Borrowing 2 studs from the opposite wheel got us rolling again.
