9 Instrument Setup

9.1 MX and B&C Filter Locations

Filters to be used with MX can be inserted in four places. The filters installed in the first two locations cannot be removed or replaced during the night except by J. Hill. The B&C lamp and acquisition television filters can be changed any time. Do NOT remove the Acquisition TV to change the filters.

1. B&C filter wheel below the fiber slit (6 positions, # 5 is open)
2. MX Top Comparison Quartz Lamp (stack of 2, Hoya LB120)
3. B&C lamp filters (stacks of 2, normally blank)
4. Acquisition TV filter (1 thin holder, normally Hoya B460)

The ring of filters available above the B&C in long slit mode is not available with MX for obvious reasons.

9.2 MX Shutter Locations

1. Dome Shutters (telescope operator)
2. Primary Mirror Covers (telescope operator)
3. Barn Doors above focal plane (MX toggle switches)
4. Erfle Mirror above focal plane (MX toggle switches)
5. Below-the-Slit Shutter (CCD Controller)
6. Behind-the-Slit Viewer Mirror (manual on B&C)
7. Grating Cover (manual inside B&C)
8. Schmidt Camera Shutter (manual on B&C)
