1. Description of Tasks

1.1 Supply Description

1.1.1 Bell Jar Carriage

The supply includes the construction and assembly of two steel carriages (crabs). These two carriages are used to mate/de-mate the aluminizing bell jar with the dummy mirror cell. The aluminizing bell jar and the dummy cell are combined to form a vacuum vessel used to test the mirror coating system for the telescope primary mirror in the vertical (horizon-pointing) position. The carriage for the aluminzing bell jar is motorized in order to move along rails to mate the bell jar with the dummy mirror cell. The aluminizing bell jar and the dummy mirror cell are both currently in fabrication at Ansaldo Energia in Milan, Italy. The supply includes delivery (but not installation) of a short section of rail.

In detail the supply includes:

1.1.2 Technical Specifications

The hardware will be manufactured in accordance with the Large Binocular Telescope Project's Technical Specification "401a026", entitled "Crabs for Bell Jar and M1 Dummy Cell", revision "b", dated August 23, 1999; and in accordance with the applicable drawings listed below.

1.1.3 Delivery Date

The preferred delivery date for the Bell Jar Carriages is February 15, 2000.

The proposal should include a timeline of the Supply activities including shipping to Columbus, Ohio where the testing of the of the aluminizing system will occur.

1.1.4 Shipping

The Supply includes shipping the carriages to a warehouse supplied by The Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio.

The items will reside in Columbus for approximately one year, and then will be shipped along with the bell jar to the final erection location on Mt. Graham in Arizona. The Supply does not include shipping the carriages to Arizona.

Please list the shipping and insurance costs to Columbus as separate items from the price of the main supply.

1.1.5 Technical Assistance during Erection

Technical assistance during erection of the carriages in the warehouse in Columbus for the installation of the bell jar is not included in this Supply. The LBTC reserves the right to negotiate for such services at a later time.
